Bible. Christ — King of Jews

He that is born King of the Jews

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Luk 2, 6.
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews (ὁ τεχθεὶς βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων)? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. Num 24, 17. Isa 60, 3.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel (ὅστις ποιμανεῖ τὸν λαόν μου τὸν Ἰσραήλ). Mic 5, 2. Jhn 7, 42.

The writing on the cross: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews (Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων)? Mat 27, 11. Mar 15, 2. Luk 23, 3.
34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation (τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν) and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Dan 2, 44.
37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 1Ti 6, 13.
38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews (τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων)? Mat 27, 15. Mar 15, 6. Luk 23, 17.
40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. Act 3, 14.

1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. Mat 27, 26. Mar 15, 15.
2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews (ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων)! and they smote him with their hands.
4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. Jhn 18, 38. Act 3, 13.
5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. Mat 27, 23. Mar 15, 14. Luk 23, 4. Act 13, 28.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God (υἱὸν θεοῦ). Deu 18, 20.
8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. Isa 53, 7. Jhn 18, 33.
10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. Luk 22, 53.

19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS (ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων).
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews (Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων); but that he said, I am King of the Jews (Βασιλεύς εἰμι τῶν Ἰουδαίων).
22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
