Father Vladimir Shmaliy

Vladimir Shmaliy is an associate professor of theology and vice rector for academic affairs at the Moscow Theological Academy (MTA). Educated at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in applied physics, he went on to study at Moscow Theological Seminary. He received his «candidate of theology» degree from the MTA in 1997 and was ordained a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church in 2001. He had begun his teaching career as a lecturer at MTA four years earlier, and he also served as a lecturer at St. John the Theologian Orthodox University for five years. Father Shamliy was appointed to his present administrative position in 2002 and promoted to associate professor two years later. He serves as a theological consultant to the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate and as secretary of the Holy Synod Theological Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church. A former member of the Theological Study Commission of the Conference of European Churches and the World Council of Churches’ Faith and Order Commission, he is currently a member of the Russian Orthodox Church delegations in dialogue with pre-Chalcedonian churches, the Evangelical Church of Germany, and the Finnish Lutheran Church. His papers on ethics, science and theology, theological anthropology, and ecumenism have been published in various conference proceedings.
